Well, he was given some pretty awful material to work with from Tony, but yeah, I think the general W&W criticism of him sounding like he has no clue what to do with what he's given is clearest on this track. There are so many lines that just come off as incredibly clunky and awkward when sung in the utterly straightforward manner Phil goes with (not that they would work even if Gabriel got to put his very best spin on them). I think "abysmal" is a little strong, but whatever.
