I get why people who don’t like James’ voice would especially hate “The Spirit Carries On” with the combination of those vocals, the overly simplistic lyrics and it tapping into the vibe of Pink Floyd’s “Eclipse” too hard, but I totally buy into it as a live track when I’m surrounded by the “polite” Dream Theater audience singing along to it. 😉 And someone who does have an extremely positive view on where we go after death, it does have resonance to me, as trite as it may be presented. The heavier songs like “Fatal Tragedy”, “Beyond This Life” and “Home” with long showoff jam sections are where it really gets me as both a live and studio experience though.
