This is an extremely Eurocentric perspective which places the importance of melody above rhythmic intricacy/composition (a place where the Stones outshine every contemporary band) and performance (a place where the Stones must be in the upper echelons of their generation, at least). You fail to account not only for these elements which are essential to non-European music and folk music, but also for the advent of recorded music which surely will shape music perceptions down the line. Already there are artists who do not meet your specious criteria who are more widely-acknowledged now than in their own heyday (think Fela Kuti), and with the additional advent of the internet, this phenomenon will only be magnified. tldr: it is impossible to judge music in the age of recording and free information by the same metric as classical European music, and is narrow-minded and dangerous to make sweeping statements to this effect. |
