From what I read from a brief google search. Zappa seems to use motivic development without taking in consideration the tonality. Which seems a lot like Schoenberg free atonality periodic composition. Apparently he rarely write serial works. I guess maybe there is some synthesis of this with jazz (although Milton Babbitt synthesis of jazz and serialism was already done) and popular music which makes him unique would be my guess?
