Could be "things" maybe?
But tbh It could still be "Bees". if a highpass filter was applied a bit too generously on the vocal tracks (which would have been the case in the 60s with less precise equipment) that could make it so that low-end-heavy plosives like "B" sounds are reduced.

Couldn't tell you if thats actually what is going on there but its a possible explanation.
