New studies show that it's about scent. If you leave at 8 A.M. and return at 6:25 P.M., the scent that you leave behind dissipates steadily through the day. Hidden cameras show that a sleeping dogs wake up right on time, day after day.
However, if some worn socks are sealed in a tube, and it's opened remotely at noon, putting your scent back in the air anew, the scent hasn't dissipated as much as usual by 6:25, and the dog sleeps through the owner's return, day after day.
It'd amazing that they can pinpoint the amount of scent gone, and that it brings them out of a deep sleep! They keep track of scent in their sleep? Wow!
