Do your dogs ever act as though they want more food? As if they hadn't been fed, when they have?
If so, how do you handle that?
When my dogs do that - I give in and feed them extra. The reason being that, they don't do it just because. It's as if some days they are hungrier than others.
Hira loves food, poor girl has food issues - as in, she can't get enough. And, she's the first one to show up when a snack is waiting. I offer snacks during the day sometimes, just because it makes her happy. I try low calorie bits like plain, air-popped popcorn. Since it's mostly in her head, because she's now is no longer thin, and is in danger of losing her girlish figure - thus low-cal treats.
However, she doesn't throw fits about actual meals. She's just not pushy that way. She's quite mellow, actually, unless pushed by Krypto...!
On the other hand, the junior wolf has always been so-so on food. Some days he ate great, other days he practically didn't eat. For 2 years we dealt with him self-regulating his food. Then, we changed foods right when Hira came in, and he decided that he needed to eat 2ce a day, every day, with his usual amount, and he doesn't leave a bite behind. Because he is no longer an only dog? Because of the food?
Normally, I'd worry that a dog would learn a bad habit with wanting more food...but Krypto doesn't seem to. Once he's eaten, he's done with thinking about food. And, if he wants more, which is not that often, he really cries. Then, a little more food, and that's it. I've been waiting for it to become a regular event, but it hasn't. He's just still self-regulating his food, it seems.
And, unlike Hira looking well-fed, Krypto is never over-weight.
So, unless something changes, I'm going to stick with this.
We did reduce Hira's amount of food per meal a little, and she didn't appear to miss it.
How about your pups?
