If you were there in 96. You were likely using " Netscape viewer". The Internet was clunky in '96.
I think, it's more likely you 1st arrived in late 97 or 98.
Windows 95 was a nice office suite. But it was windows 98 that made the Internet more accessible. '95 worked best on the Internet for users that had basic programming/ commands knowledge- the language "basic".
Myself- who-ah.... I fiddle farted around in the mid 80's. The Internet back then was a data base. It wasn't interactive.
The fall of 97. 2 way dialup went mainstream with a number of companies offering dialup service anywhere there was a telephone line. In 1993. You could get dialup. But depending on the server location. It came with long distance fees. Making it inaccessible/ cost prohibitive for the average person. I think the interface was called cello. It was black screen- green typeface with the blinking cursor box. Zero animation/ artwork. Windows 95 changed the interface. Created a user friendly interface with art work/ animation.
But windows '98 was really the moment the net became available to anybody that wanted it. Cello wasn't much more than a fax machine in real time. Including a cradle you put your telephone handset into.
