Regardless. Its fun to get to watch the kids do the debut season. Years ago. I could only read on the youngsters in the tsn print version that arrived a week late & outdated. Often times hyping a prospect that had already been sent back down.
It is a true treat to watch it in real time in this era of easy mass access to televised sports.
I still remember going to the oakland coluseum to watch a young tc prospect. Much hyped as the next tony olivia. I was some what surprised to see the hyped kid in person. Expecting an athletic body and instead the dude was a short, bald fattish kid. Kirby Pucket was his name.
Body type be damned. One of the greatest twins prospect success stories of my years following mlb. But i remember that saturday on oakland vividly. I groaned audibly when i realized the fat kid was indeed the much hyped prospect. Of course. My assessment that the kid was overhyped soon to fail was 100% wrong. Body shame bias?
W/O Kirby? I doubt the twinks win those 2 ws in '87 & '91.
Moral of the story? Prospects gotsta play the string out. Most dont become stars. And its often the unlikliest guy that rises above his peers. Becomes the best in class.
