Meters do have to be replaced sometimes - mine was after I had solar panels installed, as the original electromechanical meter went backwards when system was feeding the grid. The replacement was a "dumb" electronic meter. IIRC my late m-i-l had her meter changed due to a "reached the end of it's life" situation & she had a new "dumb" meter fitted as well.

The supply companies have targets to meeet (set by government) for installing "smart" meters, but there is no legal requirement for you to agree to have one fitted.

which suggests that "dumb" meters may no longer be available & that you may now not have any choice in the matter.
