I am like Jerry, and since I bought my first bike I have always kept them clean and shiny, regardless of their age and use.
It is called pride of ownership. IMHO, and it may or may not be others, a dirty/rusty bike is a neglected bike. I don't care if you/they call it patina.
Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.
