Wet, and yuk bikes

I don't have a bad weather bike as such. The R80ST and the V Strom will just have to get dirty if I decide to go out. My usual response is to clean the key bit (chain on the V Strom and lube it, nothing on the ST) then wait until I can be bothered to clean it. Life is a long way from the Saturday morning cleaning rituals of old.

But, I wonder if any of you still keep the legendary winter hack - obviously, as a boxer rider mine would have been an MZ Supa 5!

One of my previous winter hacks was an MZ ETZ 250 - never should have got rid of it.

Current winter hack is the Enfield Himalayan, still use it a bit during the summer months, but mainly for winter / all weathers use.

Back in the day, my ritual cleaning day was Sunday afternoons.

Who needs a signature anyway......

My all weather bike is the old T120r. Easy to clean unlike the huge newish bikes. What i dont do though is ride around when the salt is on the road.

The Honda Innova is my year round bike, has been since I bought it a decade or more ago. The fuel savings over the first year of ownership paid for it.
The bigger bikes are not used for commuting nowadays. I no longer have to do long trips over the UK for work, tyres/chains for the 125 are cheaper than they are for my pushbikes.

Recently I have had 2 modern bikes. The older less valuable one has nominally been the winter hack.
This policy has now been turned on its head as my RT has such superior weather protection that its doing winter duties.

If you recall, Jerry bought himself a Suzuki winter hack; problem is that he can't bring himself to stop polishing it after every ride!

I am like Jerry, and since I bought my first bike I have always kept them clean and shiny, regardless of their age and use.

It is called pride of ownership. IMHO, and it may or may not be others, a dirty/rusty bike is a neglected bike. I don't care if you/they call it patina.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

Thats true n many cases, but if one of my bikes is dirty its because I'm too busy riding it to clean it!

That's me too. I don't want my bikes to get corroded from neglect, but my pride of ownership is rooted in the miles I've put on it, places I've seen, and people I've met, not in the Brasso gleam and the cloud of pipeclay ....

Speedmaster and KH are kept very clean, in fact neither go out in the wet.

The Him gets washed pretty regularly but during the winter months it can get a bit grubby.

I agree in general I like my bikes clean.

This is about as dirty as I can cope with. I agree with Geoff though - it's much easier to clean this than it is to clean the V Strom

Only bike i did leave a bit dirty was a G5 Matchless i had to ride to work every day in all weathers. A 55 pound buy and already in a poor state so just got brush painted with gloss paint. It finally broke down in a notorious Council Estate. Just an electrical failure and i had to leave it overnight. Next day, i returned to find the locals had thrown rocks at it so sold for spares at 10 pound then bought a brand new CZ175 as i really needed the reliability each Morning.
Oddest thing with a CZ is it could start and run backwards. Funny experience trying to pull away and it is reversing. Lovely little trouble free bike. I wanted a Honda CB200 but just not enough money to buy a new one.

I knew a chap many many years ago who said his BSA Bantam did that. Didn't see it, but would have love to have done so.

A two stroke that starts and runs backwards has the ignition too far advanced. Villiers engines, Bantams and almost all two strokes would do this.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

My first bike was a CZ175 that would do the reversing trick.

I had a 1930's (?) Stuart Turner 2-smoke circa 150cc auxiliary petrol engine in one of my sailing boats. To go astern it was necessary to stop the engine, flick a lever and restart it running 'backwards'. Ruddy terrifying with the 2-smoke's tendency to be very temperamental to start when hot.
