OK, seems like I've got it wrong. To be honest I have only visited the ACE three times and one of those was either the re-opening or the re-Union when Rita Tushingham was there, but passed by on several occasions. In the book"The Ace Cafe then and now" a guy named Barry Cheese clearly refutes the "Record race" and states "it was an invention of the BBC in the Dixon of Dock Green programme" and states "the only racing was between ourselves".
It is obvious I must have latched on to hearsay about the ACE all those years ago which was just that but stayed with me. I now offer my humble apologies to Jerry and Lannis.
