The owner of the 239 Ducati that I took to the Ardingly show and picked up second prize class award can't ride at the moment so asked me to put some miles on it. Bloody hell I mean that is really abusing my friendship. Oh well I have done my best and put around 30 miles on it now how do I get rid of this big smile on my face

Never mind the speeding ticket, Jerry's punishment will be entirely physical from the Ducati's riding position, firm suspension, firmer seat and the backbreaking delights of London's speed humps and potholes.

Stu lucky for me the bike is registered as historic vehicle which are exempt from the nasty midget Khans ULEZ con tax.

Dave I like you grew up using the Ace but the ride there now is so bad and the area is shite just like many parts of the London that you and I remember.

Rose tinted wosname said. Areas like the where the Ace is located being on or extremely close to a major trunk road were never pleasant areas or environments. BUT as young TU boys we did not look beyond the road surface, road junctions and/or the final destination, like thevAce. Similarly on the return journey in the dark we would see even less of the surroundings. The general area where such venues existed tended to be shite areas in reality.

Now we are older and wiser we can, and do, notice our surroundings but in the main we would not want to live in the close neighbourhood to such an establishment.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

They were great days but can't imagine what it's like now I did go to the new opening when Wilsmore restricted it and got the T shirt but the best days were coming back from race meetings in the Van after a hard weekend and popping in for a stop off..

Not all true Mike, for starters the traffic didn't even come close to what travels through there now. It was bad enough when I left London 50 odd years ago and I'm sure it has continued to deteriorate since. A burn up away from the lights at Hangar lane would be a non-starter today and I would wager a race away and back from the ACE to beat the record playing when they left would never occur probably because the road used either no longer exists or has bollards and a lot of pot-holes. Coppers now-a-days would also be more heavy on them rather than the b*****ing we often got. They were a little softer on us then, and more respected. I could go on but your eyes are probably drooping now and the clock has passed Merlot time.

Den I don't remember trying to beat the record on the juke box associated with the Ace. I think that started at Johnsons café on the A20 in Kent. Still happy days though.

Den I have seen lots of stories re the Ace and some of the guys on you tube telling them I know and a lot of things are exaggerated. I did use the Ace a lot in the 60's but never came across the record racing but maybe I missed it.

OK, seems like I've got it wrong. To be honest I have only visited the ACE three times and one of those was either the re-opening or the re-Union when Rita Tushingham was there, but passed by on several occasions. In the book"The Ace Cafe then and now" a guy named Barry Cheese clearly refutes the "Record race" and states "it was an invention of the BBC in the Dixon of Dock Green programme" and states "the only racing was between ourselves".
It is obvious I must have latched on to hearsay about the ACE all those years ago which was just that but stayed with me. I now offer my humble apologies to Jerry and Lannis.

And I would have been pleased to do so. Unfortunately I had to leave the ACE before Ms Tushingham turned up to go to a matinee show. I'd even taken the cover from my video in the hope to get it autographed. I believe she turned up around 1400hrs.

I always thought that was a myth. I once to my road going 1948 7R up to the Ace one night leaned it against the wall and went inside for Coffee came out and couldn't get anywhere near to the bike.. I used the number pates from my old AJS bike which I still have..Tha would be around 1957. ( bought the 7R from Pankhurst motors near the Goldhawk Road turn off £35 sold it for £40)
