You are an exception Bonny Geoff. Few grandparents or parents have your facilities or knowledge. I have the facilities and served an apprenticeship in the motor trade but I don't even think about servicing or repairing mine or my kids' modern vehicles with their cramped engine bays and complex electronics that need resetting/aligning after doing the most straightforward mechanical jobs.
Just visiting my local tip is evidence of stuff that could probably be easily repaired. I took away a couple of lawn mowers when it was permitted. One just needed a new throttle cable and the other a carb clean after which they worked fine and I sold them.
