Driving licence renewal

My wife has just had a letter from DVLA advising her her car driving licence is shortly due for renewal, it said to renew on line. We tried that but after entering her National Insurance Number it rejected the application and said to apply for paper forms to be sent. Cant see why this is unless you can only use online system if you have a clean bill of health, wife has diabetes which has previously been notified to DVLA. Have now ordered the paper application forms so will have to wait for them and do it by 'snail mail'

Is she doing her first 70 year old renewal or has she already got a photo card licence?

Already has photocard licence and second over 70 year old renewal

Still have mine and well into my eighties but think that will be knocked on the head now

Recently got another over 70s licence, received it in about a week, I think it’s the 4th or 5th my daughter helped me do it on line.

I'm 64. Just had my 10 year photocard renewal notice. Can't renew online (£14) as I do not have a passport. So have to do it at a Post Office, £21.50. This includes photo & a Post Office 'service charge'.

Renewal by post is free, i renewed my photo a month ago by post. As you say the Post Office make a charge & I believe there are other agency's who do it on line but make a charge.

The "agencies" that do driving licence and passport renewals are NOT truly agencies and have no responsibility to the true government agencies. They are merely rip off private organisations who deceive people by having sites that look like official sites. Their charges are far greater than using the official sites.

Notifying DVLA depends upon how diabetes is controlled. If is controlled ONLY by diet you do not have to notify.

Control by insulin injections and certain tablet medication requires notification. I guess that the need for a paper application form is so that you can confirm your dosage of tablets and to check that the treatment has not changed from the last notification. Seems perfectly reasonable.

Maybe but one would have thought the same form & questions could filled in on line. This is normally the type of diabetes and medication, name and address of GP and / or hospital specialist if applicable. I think the glitch in the online application in my wife's case is probably not linking via the NHS number, it did not reject on statement of diabetes, only later on in the form when the NHS number was requested. Incidentally the letter did state that applying on line was free of charge, but a photo was not required on this application, it was renewed 3 years ago.

Interesting, have the official DVLA letter (D798C) in front of me.
No postal option mentioned for renewal of photocard licence. Only £14 for online, or £21.50 at the PO. Maybe the rules are different for 70 & over?

As it's not due till 8/10, I'll have a look. No mention in the official letter, or that I've found on the DVLA site.

Interesting GR, at the top you mention National Insurance number and now you mention National Health Number. They are not the same, are you sure you are not unintentionally confusing the robot at the DVLA and that is why it has referred you to application by post?

I am in the process of trying to renew my license, the second over 70 renewal.
I have Parkinson's and the DVLA doctor has to communicate with my GP and Neurology Consultant, my license has run out and I now drive under a section 88 rule until all is sorted and I get the renewal or the license is revoked.
No charges other than postage stamps to return the forms sent to me by the DVLA.

Sloper runs again.

That's the point of my post above Divie. If GR, or his wife, is quoting the NI number it probably won't mean much to the DVLA as they will require the NHS number to check with his wife's Doctor in respect of her health record if need be. Of course I might be talking BS, I often do, but it's a possibility why he is not getting a response from the on-line application.

Sorry Den typo, I meant National Insurance Number, it is this number that DVLA required. Correct number was entered but rejected. This from DVLA instructions

You’ll need:

your UK passport (either current or expired within the past 12 months) or the document you used to set up your online immigration status
your current driving licence (if you have it)
your National Insurance number (if you know it)
addresses of where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
