How to respond?

Hooray, cyclists having a hard time: we hate them so that's great...

Oh, hang on... we hate 20mph limits too so that's bad. Or is it great? So hard to know.

Then there's the 17% decline in serious or fatal accidents to pedestrians. I can't remember if we hate pedestrians too.

For those who do stick to the 20 limit, it will be safer for pedestrians and bicycles but maybe when all the bikes overtake the cars, they might hit a 20 mph car coming towards them.
A lot of car drivers do keep speeds down where people walk or ride but also, many will drive around completely ignoring limits and driving on the rear of the slow cars. I think 30 mph is good enough in Towns and villages.

Well in the article it does say "Welsh government statisticians are cautious, warning that figures can be volatile and only cover a short period so far."

So perhaps we need a longer period before people start trumpeting how successful it is.

Seems pretty stupid re routing the cycle ride, FFS once the riders have passed through things will be back to "normal".

There will always be people that ignore any speed limit so will the 20 MPH make much difference in the longer term ?

There will always be people that ignore any speed limit so will the 20 MPH make much difference in the longer term ?

That is a basic flaw in our legal system......like when they ban someone from driving for driving without a licence. If they didn't care in the first instance so why would they in the future?

Very good point - if you watch any of the cop programes on the digital channels you will see they are always coming across banned drivers.

If 20 mph is good, 5 mph would be even better.

Someone is grandstanding ...

A stretch of road is closed because the cyclists are racing (presumably the law on racing on the public road does still apply to cyclists?). Therefore, if the road's closed, why can't it remain closed 'til the support vehicles have also passed? Support vehicles will be close behind the cyclists so the road remaining closed 'til all cyclists and support vehicles have passed is difficult?

We have 20 mph limits through populated areas all over Scotland. Rrpita. However, with fcuk-all enforcement, if you want to ignore 'em, you can.

I know some Welsh police forces are notable for the monumentally-stupid chief constables and other senior officers they choose but, in real life, one or more are really going to instruct their junior officers to stand in amongst racing pushbikes with a speed gun to nick 'speeding' support vehicles? Really?

The whole thing makes no sense anyway as modern-day racing cyclists travel at considerably higher speeds than 20mph. Will Welsh plod nick all of them as they ride through the 20 zones?

If you read the paper Al it states the speed limits do not apply to cyclists. But they can still hurt if they hit you and I do believe, I may be wrong, insurance isn't compulsory either.

I tried Googling to find out if 20 mph zones do actually reduce accidents, but came across many peer-reviewed papers going back many years from many different countires / regions & pretty well all cocnclude that accident rates were either the same or worse than 30 limits IIRC. The severity of the outcomes may be lessened, but the rates didn't change much or changed the wrong way.

While I have to point out that what I found rather ties up with my bias against these "sticking plaster" schemes that play heavily on the "perception of safety" over reality, it also ties up with my largely negative experiences of such schemes. Both pedestrians & other drivers in such areas appear to think that they don't have to think any more & are more reliant upon drivers who have the right of way avoiding their lack of attention to their surroundings - cars pulling out of junctions without looking or having any intetion of stopping or giving way, pedestrians just stepping in front of moving vehicles without looking up from their mobile phones etc.

Roads are inherently dangeraous spaces for all users & I feel it is wrong to try and give the impression that putting in place an unfeasably slow speed limit somehow makes them "safe".

What never fails to amaze me is the vast number of pedestrians that will stare at the traffic lights and wait for the little man to change from red to green and immediately walk straight across without a single glance to the right or left. They've obviously never heard of the motorist that will take any opportunity to continue on his journey without paying too much consideration for the Highway Code.

Don't know if it's changed but when travelling around Australia when you drove int atown or small settlement it was always a low speed which makes sense to me..
