Budget and road tax

I see we are going to have to pay more for our road tax since the clowns first budget. Trying to tax one of my bikes and online payment service isn't working. Look like it will be around 6% increase. Going to have to sorn some of my bikes this winter.

Quite often goes up in the budget. My Diesel car expires today but I anticipated it would be a certainty so renewed last week.

Road tax dosnt go up if your car dosnt exceed the pollution specified by your vehicles age so check your MOT. In three years time it gets tougher.. So we did the right thing by going for the Skoda only three cylinder one litre engine far better the the 2.5 five cylinder Volvo Tank tough sad to see it go it still passes the emissions test though

No Skodas here. Only time I ever heard of one was when one of Kipling's shell-shocked soldiers in the WWI trenches described the gun he served....

I rode in one last time I was there. Seemed like a nice car, much like my son's VW Jetta.

The Skoda Octavia is very popular for taxi fleets in my neck of the woods which is one of the reasons that I bought one four years ago and I've been delighted with its design, construction, reliability and economy.

Graham my son has had Skodas for sometime now he still has his old rear engined one though fitted a Fiat twin cam engine..our one is the fabia plenty of room inside and Graham managed to get us the spare wheel and tools ..mind you I don't drive thats Maz's job ....

I have had no spare wheel on any car since 2002, however, when i did get a puncture out in the Countryside, there was a big hole in the tyre so impossible to seal with the can supplied. It took a long time for recovery on a truck to my house. Then, next day, it was towed to a tyre fitting garage. Not very convenient but the reason for no spare is to keep weight down and the car into a lower vehicle tax bracket on some models.
The breakdown vehicles do carry a universal spare wheel now and fit that then you return it after the tyre repair so much better now.
My Toyota has a battery where the spare wheel is normally fitted

I did notice that new cars over 40,000 pounds will be taxed at 190 with an extra 400 a year to pay for the first 4 years. My current car was 37,000 and i expect its replacement to cost a bit more so i will look at just the cars that can be bought for 39,999 pounds. I fancied a Mercedes coupe but that will be one that has the extra tax burden.
Glad i moved the Mercedes SLK on this year but the new owner was not bothered by its high vehicle tax

Skoda built really nice steam locomotives. Their engineering was so good that they were able to manufacture a split roller big end for the centre con-rod

Must admit it looks well built all the gizmos and electrikary cam be switched off we don't need to be bleeped to say you are changing lanes or there is a vehicle in front they are doing this on bikes now and fools are buying them ..
The spare stuation bugged me yes a tin of spray and phone number.. if you use the spray the tyre is buggered the garages won't clean it out ..so now I have the proper spare and and repair set as well plus electric pump and jack..mind you havnt been out in it yet. Though Maz has no room in the garage at the moment until the VW goes

Skoda built really nice steam locomotives.

And field guns, tanks & heavy machine tools, like travelling column floor borers. And more recently IIRC they also constructed the London Eye (or part of it). But the Skoda Heavy Engineering division isn't anything to do with the cars.

The Heavy Engineering site in Plzen is huge. I worked in Plzen on a couple of occasions & was driven past the site every day to get from my digs to where I was working - literally miles long by miles wide.

Also went past the Mlada Boleslav car plant while working in the North of the county during Communist times - passed that on the motorway from Prague to Liberec where I was working. The driver pointed the factory out & said that the car plant at that time was at least partly operated by political prisoners.

Skoda is as good as many others Dave. I am sure it will last a long time. My only problem when testing some out was the steering wheel offset so not in line with the pedal box. I had to sit crooked to drive it so went elsewhere.
That old VW would be a fairly easy welding job and add new wings and a respray would be selling at 5k. Last one the boy rebuilt went to London. It had sat for a few years and he got it running and fixed the brakes and brake pipes but no journeys but the buyer just got in and drove it 190 miles home.

Geoff if you look on Facebook market place for Volvo 850 estate there are hundreds including mine the only difference in mine is an 850 number plate and the car was built to order so a few things different...has a full service history.
Already have someone interested jus need more photos.

I dont have facebook Dave but its the Beetle that is worth the money. Volvo should sell easily as bricklayers,carpenters and painters like these old hacks for work. My Neighbour has a 28 year old one that just keep going.

Really? All the carpenters, bricklayers, decorators, plasterers etc etc around here drive vans. Vans are much cheaper to buy and will carry a greater payload and do not have fabric interiors to damage.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

Always been common for the self employed tradesmen working the building sites to use Volvo estates. Vans around here are much more expensive than 25 year old Volvos that are often about 500 pounds for one with tatty paint and a few dents. The Volvo has a great flat floor and it can be covered with a ply sheet or rubber. They are not used as main cars but just for the muddy sites they work at.
They only carry tools and steps etc so no need for vans.
When i worked on sites, i had a Hillman Estate car. A long time ago.

I'm guessing maybe the tradesman using old Volvo estate cars aren't VAT registered? That was certainly the case 30+ years ago when I was on the tools & working on site and VAT on commercial vehicles was an expense few trades could recoup.
But now in my locality the tradesman are more business savvy & the prevalence of easier finance on new vans means the old estate cars have disappeared from site. Its almost a badge of honour among them that they do have a new van!

Not many self employed tradesman here would be VAT registered. The trades i notice using old estate cars do not carry materials as they are delivered to sites. My 3 Nephews who run an electrical contractors business are all self employed so none of them get to the income where Vat registration is needed. Back in the 70s it was a VAT company when i also worked for it but my brother opted out and stopped employing staff. The 3 now working use VW T5 people carriers with black side glass as the van robbers just think its a camper without tools inside. When they did use vans, one had a side door peeled off in the night and tools stolen.
So many 1 man band site workers just have the 1 car that is their family transport so the old estate cars are ideal.
Most plumbers and electricians will use a van due to so many types of fittings but even those materials can be delivered within 1 or 2 hours locally.
One local builder who worked until he died at 74 used a Shogun which was really tatty. Very wealthy man and his other car was a 70s E type. Owned many properties in his Wifes name so no Vat for him just jobbing around bricklaying.

My Volvos were all registered and insured as business vehicles I had magnetic company signed made up for the front doors ..most from the 240s t the 850s would take a full size Longcase clock with cabinet generally six to nine foot high the rear seats split to fold and front passenger seat folds flat .. the best for space was the 740.
My 850 was specially ordered by a British soldier living in Germany so not standard comes with everything but has a sun roof has the large chin spoiler at the front and rear spoiler 16 inch rims and top spec interior virtually T5 version except no turbo.. already someone interested wants
more photos original handbook and still the original tyre on the spare wheel .. odywork a few scuffs and dents easy to do .

The Volvos were favourite of antique dealers due to that long floor. I have seen one that had a long crack in the floor on each side and heading for the middle. The body was flexing a lot on one of the V6 petrol versions. Apart from that, the bodywork looked perfect.
The 850s did well in the BTCC racing.
I did hire a new 2.4 5 cylinder diesel V70 when one of my cars was being repaired. All leather interior and a real luxury car with 37mpg.
