Last year my varifocals cost 10 times more than my first bike and £50 more than a year's pay in 1962 when I was an apprentice mechanic with a R/Royce and Bentley main dealer.

I have two pairs of glasses one clear and the other Reactolite fo use on sunny days. They also have identical frames. When I need new "glasses" I always have new lenses only into my existing frames. Tight arse? Me? Not at all, but these frames are a perfect fit in every helmet thatbI have bought in the last 12,years so I keep the same frames. I also take my helmet so that I can try new frames before simply getting new lenses. You do get some strange looks standing in the opticians wearing your helmet.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

I've wanted to do that for exactly the same reason but Specsavers have refused to do it. I'll try somewhere else next time.

There is no reason for them to refuse to supply lenses only unless your current ones have integral lenses I.e. They cannot be removed.

Indeed having done your eye test they must give you the lens prescription. You are under no obligation to buy lenses or frames from them. You can then take this to any optician to make new lenses. Indeed I am fortunate because in Leicester there is a company that makes lenses for opticians, and also the general public. I take my prescription to them, they make the lenses and then fit them into my frames. They charge a fraction of the price of Specsavers etc.

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

The stunt Inverness Specsavers pulled on me was, "We can change the lenses but we no longer have a technician on site, your glasses will have to be sent away, they'll be away for up to two weeks" ... Previously, technician on site, took half-and-hour ...

They gave good service when they had a technician
on site.

Then some bean-counter said "We can eliminate the wages of the on-site tech, and can get the work done remotely just for the cost of mailing!". So they did it, and are having a budget celebration.

But now, customers who would have stayed with them are out looking for alternatives.

Eye strain is caused by staring at women`s breasts in low light. I have had Intraocular lenses inserted into my eyes to counteract this condition.

It's true.

Although.... Prices are high, but so are our incomes relative to prices, and our material standard of living is a lot better than it was when we was young lads.

Next post is going to be a Four Yorkshiremen reprise where we talk about breaking the ice on the tin washbasin in our room, picking up coal on the railroad bank and bringing it home for the fire, and the family huddling around a Philco battery radio to hear Will Hay or Jack Benny.....

I agree, but my first bike was a sh*theap of a secondhand CZ back in '77.

Re Starmers 'expensive' specs, to me they look just like the NHS ones I had as a kid in the early '70's. And was mocked for at school.

I get all my lenses for my glasses from Solent Spectacles at Toten near Southampton.

I am lucky in that still being employed my employer gives me a free eye test and spectacles every year, but only for work, I still have to buy my driving spectacles.

That will all change come retirement.

Who needs a signature anyway......
