Morini clutches

One of the things I did not like about my recently acquired Morini was the clutch - it was very "binary", some say "they all do that sir".
Long story short the Morini Riders forum is a wealth of knowledge, I asked the question and had a lot of very useful hints and tips.
The biggest tip related to the steel plates - one of the plates is slightly cupped and must be fitted in the correct position in the clutch plate stack.
Mine was fitted as per the workshop manual, which is wrong, moving it to the correct position worked wonders.
The clutch is now pretty user friendly, being a dry clutch I guess it will be a little fiercer that what I am used to.
One of the benefits of the dry clutch is maintainance - only took about 1/4 of an hour to take the plates out and swop them around.
Quite enjoying the bike, very stiff suspension, but handling is superb, taking some time to get used to the RH gearchange, it also makes a lovely sound.
Feels a bit over braked, the double discs at the front are very sharp, and the rear is a bit too good !
Only thing I have to attend to now is making an extension for the rear brake pedal as it is not quite wide enough. The kickstart pushes your leg out to the edge of the footrest and you have to swing your foot around to contact the pedal, I like the pedal under my boot so will be welding or clamping on a short extenstion.

I find my feet just will not work levers of side stand. Very awkward when your ankles no longer move. The left ankle was faulty many years but the right ankle buggered makes it all so much harder.

Maybe that should read "ease of maintenance" - which is probably just as well as they need more regular attention than the wet variety.
My ST2 dry clutch got "grabby" when it needed a clean-out - accomplished with an air line with the engine running while actuating the clutch to release the accumulated dust. Not something you have to do with a wet clucth, as the wear debris comes out with an oil change.
Might be worth having the front pads out to see what is fitted. Sintered pads ("HH" rated) seem to be very sharp in operation. Changing to a set of reputable make organic pads may make the brake more progressive. Another advantage of organics over sintered would be that organic pads are easier on the discs from both a wear and warpage POV. All good fun. That is what it should be about ! An improvement on the KH400 in that regard then ?

Yes the KH has at worst has been difficult shal we say, at best dissapointing, I will be glad to see the back of it. Having said that it has been running really well, did just over 1500 miles on it this year despite the whiney clutch which does not seem to respond to any remedial action to stop it, so given up on that one.
Same goes for the intermittant slipping - think the 2 issues are related.
Without doubt the KH500 was the best of the bunch, enough low down grunt, and lots of very useable power. The 350 "hybrid" that I had was way better than the 400 but fuel consumption was attrocious and the GPZ 305 frame it was in made it physically too small for me - but unlike the 400 it was a fun project.
The H2 was just too wild and was to eager to lift the front end, the 400 is just too lacking in everything, although the rubber mounted engine makes it extremley smooth.
The Morini is around the same BHP as the KH but the power delivery is way better, for a 350 it is very impressive, it is also very smooth, but neither as smooth as a well sorted MZ...I still have that niggling itch for another 301, but when I finally get shot of the 400 I am going to stick with just 3 bikes, but dont quote me on that :-)
