US elections O/T

How weird is the US election system? In the primaries, the candidates bag the other candidates in their own party before one is s selected. Then they switch focus and trash-talk their rival from the other party. Then they vote on a Tuesday when everyone is at work.

Actually we vote for 45 days before so-called Election Day, which is just the last day of Election Season ....

You're right about the primaries, though. Democrats can vote in the Republican primaries, so they vote for the Republican that they think will easiest to beat in the general election ....

The funny thing is, he's already been President once.

Somehow, while he was President, he forgot to be a Nazi, to eliminate elections,to put blacks back in chains, to destroy women, and to do all the other things people are screaming that he will do.

He has promised there'll be no more need for elections, among his other interesting claims.

I'll be very interested to see how Americans feel about their country in 12 months to two years' time. Then there's the international status of the country to look at. Time will reveal all: there's really no other test.

We also heard from Reuters about Russian collusion, about the "pee tapes", and a thousand other things that have not been true.

Americans, including record numbers of blacks, Arabs, and Hispanics are sick of the lies, and being told things that they can see and hear are not true, sick of forever wars over nothing ... And made a change.

How about a debate on the benefits of changing the front sprocket from 15 teeth to 16 teeth on the new Triumph Speed 400, and how many I have for sale.

Yes it is true what they say about Velocettes. They plowed their own farrow. They are a nice machine once you learnt there foibles.

The original 15 tooth sprocket means that you only need five of the six gears as it is so low geared. Changing to 16 teeth raises the ratios and makes first operate just like that on a British bike as well as reducing revs for any given speed.

I commissioned the manufacture of the 16 tooth sprocket in the UK. Subsequently I have sold nearly 80 of them.

Sounds like a fairly popular modification if you have managed to sell nearly 80 of your 16 tooth sprockets.

I wonder if Triumph will cotton onto it and start selling an alternative sprocket?

Theoverall gearing is just about the same but the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400X have different wheels and tyres. The result is that the Speed has a 15T sprocket and the Scram has a 14.

Triumph will not apparently supply a 16T because it is claimed/suggested that it would affect their Type Approval. Nonsense IMHO as they will supply and indeed dealers will fit a Triumph 15T sprocket on the Scrambler.

Until I got the 16T item tested and manufactured by Talon there was no UK based sprocket company prepared to supply the 16T...and I spoke to them all. Mine actually was made in California by Driven Racing for the KTM Duke 390, they would not export to a private individual, so my first one came from California, via a wholesaler in Berlin and then to a MotoX specialist in Coventry. Tortuous indeed.

I suppose the advantage of changing sprocket is dependent on how & where you ride. I haven't used 6th gear on any bike for decades unless I am eking out fuel on a motorway, a very rare occurrence.

In the past I found Talon extremely helpful making batches of sprockets. Everyone else shied away from one-offs or low volume production runs by quoting astronomic prices.

Yes or no, for example:-
Velocettss are difficult to start, yes if you don't know how, easy when you do.
Velocettes clutches are impossible to understand or adjust, see the answer above.
Velocettes were a breed apart, you might say they are a "marmite" machine.

When in the trade selling british bike spares I met a lot of Velocette owners, in general you could tell them by a sense of self righteousness, an unkempt often dirty beard, a dirty Mac and an unequalled stingyness unrivalled except by Vincent owners.
I enjoyed breaking up Velos, except for OHC models for which I had a ready market in France.

Well you never net me, thank goodness. I have never had a beard or a dirty mack. I have never thought of my self as self righteous unlike some dealers I have met now long gone. Oh! I used to own a Vinvent as well.

Having had 4 velo's I have never had a sense of self righteousness never had a beard and the only mac I ever owned was a Pak-a-mac (60's fold up that fitted in your pocket) to keep me dry when out walking. Never been tight with money and had lot's of Vincent owning friends. Bugger no wonder I never fitted in

Don't drag me into this one. I went to buy a Velo once but I kicked for hours and it wouldn't start. It left me exhausted and sweating like a pig. I often wondered if the LE is that difficult what on earth are those big singles like?

Vincents? Never owned one and never wanted one and let's be brutally honest they are plug ugly in extremis.

British humour is getting tough for me.

Last time Trump was president, there were no wars going on hardly anywhere. As soon as Biden was elected, we had "mostly peaceful" but "fiery" protests in the cities, war in the Ukraine, war in Israel, the Houthis attacking, China growling at Taiwan.

Trump says he's going to end all that, and people know it because Biden was a wet noodle and none of the warmongers overseas worried about him, and Trump means what he says.

Why do people think there's a bigger risk of war going forward, when there weren't any in 2016 - 2020? Or maybe it's just a joke that I don't get ... ?

And I rode a Vincent once and enjoyed it but I wouldn't try to own and care for one. They're rich experts bikes.

I have never ridden a Vincent but used to often see one parked in the local town of Wells on Saturday morning when I was a kid.

Vincents 1 - am with MM here. Somebody sent me a b'day card with one on, so it was up for a few days. Gave me a chance to look at it. Fugly.

2 I remember the Vincent in Wells, mid/late '70's?, as I recall it was covered in MAG stickers & scruffy. If it's still around now, no doubt it's been totally restored & is kept in splendid accommodation, & rarely ridden.

I went to his last concert In Orpington, Kent,Backed by our local group the Wild Angels. He was meant to have another gig in North London but cancelled and went home. Troubled man like so many others inthat business.
Did the site rocker Jerry ever go to the 'Gale cafe or that dive of a pub in Addington on rock n roll night?

Great cafe the Nightingale,all night amusement for a cup of tea and 2 bob for the pintables, a real scruffy place with Bert the owner who liked his lads. Outside on a good night 10 or 15 goldies, the odd Ford Consul; and when the Wild Angels were playing it was packed. Surprised you didn't go there, not bad enough? good boys went to the Saltbox. Not many of us left now.

The 'Gale and the Black Raven pub were the places I mispent my youth. Thnk I only went to the Ace a few times. Johnsons quite a lot, the female influence meant the Manor Cafe in Camberly and the Celler in Windsor. 59 club when she wanted a posh night out.

There was a very big turnout where I used to live in Stevenage. Bikes all along the high street. Bikes came from far and wide, a lot parked out side George Brown's shop which was almost opposite the Site of the old factory. Guy I used to work with used to work there. George ran the shop with his wife and a mechanic. I believe his sons, Tony and ? ,ran the Stevenage branch of the Vincent Owners Club, may still do. They closed the shop soon after George died and opened up on the, then, outskirts of Stevenage where the rates were cheaper.
