Should I complain?

With all the stories in the Press and on TV
Should I complain?
My first employment after leaving school was at The Alliance insurance Company in Chiswick..Job a Litho Plate maker for the litho presses.
To reach my department I had to walk through the Adressograph Dpt. Which was full of young girls operating the machines.. they made my life hell when going through passing various comments making me embarrassed.. was 17 years of age but no interest in girls ..
The worse bit was going to lunch the males hat a restroom on the top floor of the building reached by lift.. I would get in the lift and it would stop next floor when loads of young girls would pile in the lift Press the button and stall the lift between floors once again made me very embarrassed.. On a few years still working there enjoying the attention and even dated one of the girls but they still teased Only fifteen fellas among 200 females.. Should complain about the stress of the sex based comments or just enjoy my old memories..( still in touch with a couple today)..

Imagine working with machinery and wearing a tie now Dave. Last time i worked we had to have several types of clothes for safety but the most difficult area to work was in kitchens. I had to wear overshoes,mask, hair cover and a full white disposable suit with no pockets so nothing could come out of a pocket and into food. One day i was dressed in this gear to change a light bulb in a fridge when a team of senior managers were doing an inspection. They were not very happy that this was required by the catering manager for a fridge bulb. I wish i had a picture of it as i looked like a snowman

It was a posed picture Geoff did a lot for the company had to take one of a severed finger and oncea dead nun my boss was the company photographer obviously I had cheap insurance for my bike..
Just though it was funny as I was going through old pics this morning..

When I was a letterpress apprentice printer in the 50, not only were ties not allowed but also rings and wrist watches, when hand feeding had its risks especially when the guards were not in place, as they not only slowed you down but were quite painful and gave you less time to get one’s hands out.

I signed up for Typing class in high school. At the time, it was understood to be "girls only" and I caught some guff from my friends.

I didn't care; it was like being in a mohammedan paradise, just me and 72 virgins (well, 22 anyhow; no, make that 20).

Mama didn't raise no fool ....

In a similar feis Dave, after finishing my apprenticeship I got a position as a Production Engineer in a company making both air and hydraulic braking systems for commercial vehicles. On day one, in suit and tie, I rocked up with another new starter, and we had a briefing in the meeting room about company history, products etc.

Then like you we were taken through the factory department by department. First one was a fabrication area where they made the air receivers that were mounted on Lorraine's, lots of welding, metal rolling etc. So far so good. The next one was the machine shop with auto lathes and cells of two, three and four machines usually operated by one operator...90% female but they were too busy to take any notice.

Then the final shop and that walk of shame/fear. At the time there were about 300 women assembling vales etc. Some in teams of two or three and others on conveyor production lines. That was a walk through a torrent of jokes, piss taking, and ALL based upon sex. Every day for a couple of weeks various teams would concoct a problem, fault met had query to get us young new guys out into their controlled war zone...sorry workplace. The entire work,force thought it was the funniest thing that ever happened at work. It only lasted a few weeks until some new tooling designers started, and then it was their turn. If current societal norms applied many of these lovely ladies would have been sacked. Happy daze as the old boy would say. 😂⚙⚙😂

Despite many years of owning quick - & sometimes ill handling - bikes, & when I was (much) younger, going up mountains in Winter, crampons & ice axes needed, scariest moment of my life?
Being on a double decker in Nottingham. Full of already p'd up factory ladies on their way to a hen night.

Back in the late 60's the girls in my central Brighton office used to delight in wiggling along the street lunchtimes in their mini skirts to tease the wolf-whistling builders working on a nearby high rise office block who responded with typical builder level appreciation.

Indeed they would, but in those days they returned to the office and giggled all afternoon about their 'successes'.

To Finnish this true story.. after a while I got used to it and obviously gave as good as I got..
After work one evening going home on my AJS bike showing off to the girls waiting at the bus stop Turnham Green Chiswick High Street.when somebody stepped out onto the zebra crossing slapped the brakes on bike went down with me following ..picked myself up as if nothing happened went home with mouth beeding and painful ..I had broken my top front teeth.... Next day to the dentists in Chiswick.. Outcome Front teeth out and a pate made
Funny thing while going to my appointments I kept seeing Tomy Cooper who was also having dentures..funny sitting next to him in the waiting room chatting..I would never believe that inflater years when I worked in London I would meet a few more heroes.

Dangerous? I once got a freeie seat on a coach day shopping trip to Calais, coach load of older ladies, only me and the driver male, and I was a lot younger. Inappropriate behaviour? you know nothing. and I was sat in the back seat.

Those "current societal norms" would go both ways.

Back in those pre-married days, any girl making that sort of suggestion, in private or public, would have to "put up or shut up" quick fast and in a hurry. They're mighty brave when surrounded by a dozen of their mates, I remember; maybe not so much when you'd find yourself alone with one .... !

When I changed jobs and worked in South London the Litho department was above Letraset( anyone remember them) we used to shout at the mainly female staff when they went out to lunch..or pelt them with wet cotton wool..
