At least we don't have to drink this stuff anymore. It was enough to make you want to give up drink.

Thats a rictus grin, which google defines as:

My main drink was ESB Fullers not allowed to drink alcohol anymore.. I have a funny story about going to New Scotland Yard and picking up 150 firearms and ammo and had too mutch to drink..

Watneys was brewed at Mortlake so must have been the local ale in your youth. Suprised it didn't put you off all beer for life!
Or were you born closer to Youngs in Wandsworth? A disgusting pint that could really open up the bodily sluices at both ends. It tasted like the River Wandle looked = a close cousin to an open sewer.

Will I grew up in Mortlake very close in fact I can still remember the Watneys hooter going in the mornings and lunch time to get workers back on time. Lot of Watneys workers lived in Worple street where I lived until 7 years old then Moved to Barnes. All the pubs in the area were Watneys or Youngs and both delivered the beer using shire Horses and carts.
