20mph Aggro

In London we are getting more and more 20mph roads. My son has just been done for doing 24mph and a mate just been to a speed awareness course for doing the same. He told me there were drivers on the course being done for 22 mph!!! Biggest problem is trying to stick to this limit without some twat of a driver behind tailgating you driving about a inch from the rear of your car often flashing there lights and occasionally passing while waving a fist at you. Seems to me it is causing just more road rage rather than saving lives. I just think it's another money making tax.

I can understand 20 limits in a school area but elsewhere you are causing more pollution in a lower gear so engine pumping out more emissions

Not in a modern vehicle with EFI, you aren't. Geoff posted the above a while ago, I checked - my Skoda Yeti has an instantaneous "Consumption" read out - tells me the car has the same fuel consumption at the same steady speed whether it's in first or sixth.

Find that hard to believe if you are in a lower gear the engine is raving more my skoda has all that info absolutely ridiculous I know when I change lanes or am near to a vehical in front or behind even tells what gear your in I know just put it there Yesterday was at the dealers for over 7 hours for working on a failed electric window unit that failed after five days of ownership ( common on Skodas just look on U tube ) they did give it a wash and a diagnosis
I like the car because it has a proper key and handbrake and now a spare wheel with all tools.

They are even fitted to Ambulances and Fire engines nothey send most of the time on the wrong side of the road the first thing they do is disable then reported by Ambulance driver when I've been to hospital also my Soninlaw has been a fire enginedriver fo over 25years said the same..

I was back in London 2 weeks ago for the first time in 5 years.
Problem on the tube, so I jumped in a Black Cab to get me back to St. Pancras, having lost 15 mins in the delay.
20 mph in a cab along Euston Rd. & every set of lights against us! No chance!
I missed the closed signal for the train gate, but the Barrier Man asked if I'd been on the Met Line. I confirmed it & said I'd jumped out & got a cab for speed.
He laughed, "Gotcha! Not a snowball's these days. I'll sign your ticket for the next one."

With respect, so pull over, let the twat pass and get the fine 'n' three points or speed awareness course for exceeding the limit?

People are in a hurry for their own reasons, nothing to do with you. So let 'em go?

Bus lanes mean you can't pull over in London - just crossing the line triggers an auto-penalty!

Pull over towards the right (e.g. central reservation on the Euston Road), let the guy that wants to get past get the bus lane penalty and the speeding penalty ...

Good idea Stu but not always possible to pull over. Driver on a narrow road could think you are trying to slow even more to wind him up and that can cause more road rage. Don't ask me how I know this but there are some very aggressive people here.

The clue there is in the word "guidelines". There is no legal margin of error and you can be prosecuted for any speed over the limit if the police so desire, and if they do the "guidelines" would not be a defence in court.

20 limits are the tip of the iceberg. In Wales (where else would it be?) either side of 20 limits is now 30 where it used to be 40.
One long local stretch of well maintained hazard free dual carriageway that is a significant arterial route has gone from 70 to 50 with no explanation. The only reasons I can see is that cyclist competing in a race was knocked off & died (who had the bright idea of holding a bicycle race on a dual carriageway?) Or its just a petty bureaucrat or politician with a personal axe to grind.
And there's a stretch of A road that has been reduced to 30 for several miles because its a tourist route and dozy tourists drive slowly holding up all the other traffic. Solution? Reduce the speed limit to suit the minority so they can admire the views without having to stop!

Aiui, if the limit is 50 mph or less, lower (= cheaper) maintenance standards apply ...

Our Steamed Scottish Government is currently consulting on whether:-

. the single-carriageway UK NSL (National Speed Limit) 60 mph should become ESNSL (Except Scotland National Speed Limit)

. the single-carriageway SNSL (Scottish National Speed Limit) should become 50 mph;

. at the same time, the single-carriageway SNSL for vehicles over 7.5t raised to 50 mph.

Gald I dont live in Londonistan, mind you there are a few 20mph limits randomly appearing around here.

As mentioned before cant see why they are there, not been any accidents reported in the areas wher they are.

Know what you mean about people driving up yer arse in these 20 limits, a few times on the Him I have pulled over to let them pass, often accompanied by tooting of their horn or waving fists.

From what you are saying I dont honestly think I could ever drive in London again.

As Dave said, no problem with 20 mph past schools during school time. But on good A roads WHY? I have now adopted setting the speed limiter at 20 mph, as trying to maintain 20 mph requires constantly checking the speedo, with eyes not being focused on the road ahead, definitely not great for safe driving. Yes there is always someone up your rear, but I just ignore them when in the car, but accepted it's far from ideal when on a motorcycle. Fortunately I don't have any need to use 20 mph roads in my area when on a bike.

Likewise no issue with them around schools during school time, or in places where there have been accidents.

Just seem to popping up all over the place yet another thing to irritate.

Leon, It's a speed limiter not cruise control. You set it at the speed you do not wish to exceed, then drive as normal. It can be over-ridden by flooring the accelerator pedal.
