News this morning over 700,000 cars stolen in a year Cars with electronic fobs usually parked outside seeing as most people use their garages to store their rubbish I know some don't have an option Now the Government is asking manufacturers make cars more safe even heavy lorries Ambulances and Fire engines have the same systems.

Range Rovers are the most sought after for these electronic trickery thefts. They go into containers and moved abroad.. Average ordinary cars are fairly safe though. Most thefts are the higher priced and sports cars. You can put the key fob out of range or into a Faraday cage type pouch.
Never had a car stolen but when the cars were simple, if i parked in areas where theft might happen, i used to remove the rotor arm and take it with me.

There's an Ap that you can get on your mobile that enables you to punch in the reg number and bingo
The other is a transmitter and receiver that came be bought online if you know whare to look that reads the fob in a house .
The set up was a big mistake in the first place
My neighbour has nurses calling three time a day to see to her needs as she mobile and need care
One day her daughter visited from Southampton the nurs called with almost the same car .. when she left she piked up the daughters key by mistake and drove off to the next location 30 miles away she also had her own key and fob in her pocket so another 30 miles drive back.. so the daughter could go home
I know this could happen with the old fashioned key .. but unlikely.

That depends on your definition of old fashioned! In the 70s my Triumph key would work in my mates Triumph. We'd been using each others key for months before we realized. Back then we laughed at continental keys that were just straight pins in the misbelief ours were more secure. Of course they weren't, they just looked it with their different "cut" shapes = one key could still open a myriad of vehicles.

More recent keys were more sophisticated and more secure, but they have sadly been replaced by electronic fobs & phone app keys.

1973 my boss drove from Romford to Bristol on business in a hired Cortina Mk2.
On the way home he was stopped by the Police near Reading on M4.
He had to get a taxi & hotel for the night, as he had no insurance to cover driving that car & then a train back to Bristol in the morning & then discovered he needed to extend the hire with a penalty for not renewing before expiry. The Police drove the car back to Bristol for the owner.
My how we laughed and how cross he became every time we rattled keys.

FFS it can be that difficult to have a system that is harder to crack, can it..........

How a bout a mechanical key - hang on that is old technology.

Perhaps the insurers or owner should be able to claim off the manufacturer when one of their vehicles is stolen due to the system being able to be cracked with aparrent ease.

Tech is not always what it is cracked up to be.

Who needs a signature anyway......

That's one of the reasons we decided on the Skoda it's not new a 16 months old got all the modern tech which is really boring but it dose have a proper key so of the tech you can program how long you need the courtesy light on after the door is closed or how many doors do you want to open when you press the fob.. Radio go to the infotainment mode look at the screen then touch the screen on which cannel you want So in that time you've ploughed into the car in front..Just a few things now you know why there are idiots on the road

Touch screens are an idiotic idea in vehicle, WTF is wrong with controls that you can just reach out to and feel without taking your eyes off the road.

Safety and touch screens dont really add up.

Totally agree, Andy. Modern cars and bikes seem like recipes for crashes.

Of course a screen is cheap for the manufacturer and he then has you over a barrel if it breaks. Just where he wants you. In case you don't actually damage one of his expensive LED light units that stop you changing a £10 bulb yourself, he can get his profit when the screen packs up.

As for a car that Musk might be able to turn off at will, I've read way too much sci fi to fail to see that coming

My last car, the Volvo had ouch screen for heater controls and a nuisance. This time i found a car with heater knobs for temperature and switches for the vents. The instrument panel has hundreds of items for adjustment so i just leave it. I did find how to take the lane departure off but has to be re-done every time the engine is stopped. Tuesday its in for an ECU alteration as hundreds of this model may have sudden brake failure if skid control cuts in. 2 hours work but i will borrow a car.
Car in my road has bought a steering wheel lock but its 30 seconds to get it off with a battery grinder. Odd to fit it on a small VW van.
The best deterrent is too find the ignition fuse holder and take that fuse out when parking in high risk areas .

Even if ineffectual a steering lock is visible, a removed fuse is not. Seeing lock a thief may move on to what appears to be an easier grab. Taking the fuse out may be effective but you could still face damaged glass or locks. Thieves are lazy and will go for a soft target so just making your vehicle even minimally more difficult to steal may be enough to divert their attention to another.

Yes, most definately seeing an alarmed vehicle with a steering wheel lock will make a thief go for another one.
Lucky around here there are not many thefts at all. I have seen young people at night trying door handles to pick off any satnavs or spare change left visible but now there are very few portable satnavs in cars.

Our car at the end of a drive which hasn't been far at the moment as you switch off the ignition the screen with the instruments on Say Check Your Oil...to open the bonnet you have to open the passenger door to open the bonnet design fault. Anyway like the car comfortable for Ia one litre three cylinder engine 50mpg ..on Friday have to go to Axminster Hospital that's an 85 mile trip so see what it's like over that trip.Oh forgot to say it comes with an Ice scraper under the fuel flap.

I found a TRL report a while back, and I'd love to know which of their staff volunteered. It looked at the impact of using a touch screen in a car compared with alcohol, phone use and slightly stoned.

I hate having to use these screens as i need a pair of reading glasses for reading but another pair for driving. Lucky my wife is usually in the car on long drives to alter heating and vents. On the last car,even trying to work the sat nav was a task from hell.
I did speak with Mercedes about some controls being difficult for the mostly elderly buyers of the new cars and they do take it on. Many alterations to make it easier in the new models so maybe a lot of people suggested improvements.
I might buy another Merc but engines are mostly 1.3 litre turbo now. The diesels worked a lot better

Heating on the Skoda are 3 knows one for Aircon The ther two heating temperature and direction up scree or front and back and side vents lights are the same driving lights come on when ignition is on they ar LED there's a switch for headlights and rear plus fog all bulbs but a bugger to replace
