68 restoration update

Just an update of the restoration of our 68 SS427-L72 custom coupe Janesville car. Finally is at the body shop in Milton. More to follow.

Re the dash photo...why the 385 HP tach? Is the oil pressure reading low because it's before an engine rebuild?

I showed that pick when we first put the car together, long before everyone said it should be a 6000 red line tach. Can't explain it and don't intend to, that is how the car came from the factory no matter what anyone else say's to be a true 425hp car. I am not sure if the car is running for the oil pressure.

Jeff,

It wasn't my intention to "challenge" you on the tachometer redline, and I apologize for causing any ill feelings...my Z24 also came from the factory with the wrong tach! But I will 'try again' with the oil pressure: I'm assuming you engine was running because the tach was showing one grand; in which case the gauge should be up around the 3/4 mark.

Sorry about my response, yes the oil pressure gauge is not registering properly, we checked it with another gauge. Just like the speedometer that never goes to zero. It shows that is what happens when a car sits for over 30 years.

Any idea what application the shifter is from? It appears to be a great fit.

The Hurst shifter is retro fitted with some very special custom fitted metal strapping to make it work. My brothers that drove the car in the early 70's hated the stock shifter.

EVERYONE hated the Muncie shifters! Especially when locking columns came out in 69,along with the reverse back drive device. Fighting issues with these shifters was a common occurrence when I worked at a Chevy dealership in the 70's. Saw many tossed in the trash,including several B body 4 speeds I owned back then. I have one in my 69 Biscayne and glad I have the original set up,but I also hate it. At least it keeps you from abusing the car with power shifts.

Sure, that would be fine. Brodhead is straight south of Waunakee and Madison about 7 miles north of the Illinois border. We have the "Famous" half way tree just outside of town. That is an Indian landmark to let them know when they were half way between Lake Michigan & the Mississippi River.
