Hello Tom. The replacement engines had their own prefix number, without a suffix like the original stamped blocks. The block is an early 512 casting, dated the second week of March 1969. I believe the 8 is a 9. The 512 blocks were not cast in 1968, and were late 1969.The stamped number on the pad is a CE, for warranty block, not an Engine casting #. The 963353 is a control number for warranty inventory. I would stamp the suffix when I replaced an engine under warranty, but not stamp the Vin number like production. That way You would know what block was used. What car is this engine in? NICK L72 Chevrolet Technician 1960 to 1980's.427impalasportcoupe

Hey Nick, Thanks for the info. I was told that the "512" was a COPO block. I didn't know if that is how the warranty blocks were ordered. This motor is in my '68 Impala SS Convertible. It is the same car that is in the project car section of the website. I believe it is an L72 car. It does have the aluminum intake and single fuel line. It also has the 6000 rpm redline tach.
The warranty on the drivetrain was 5 years or 50,000 miles. So if I replaced Your 68 engine in late 69 or 70, as long as it was not 50,000 miles, or the year 73, it could have a 512 block casting. Do You have the POP or invoice? The engine suffix should be on it. It should be a 4 bolt main with solid lifters. NICK L72427impalasportcoupe
