1967 VIN how many numbers?

My friend has a 1967 Impala convertible . It has a VIN that only has 12 digits and of course the letter for where it was made. People are telling him it is bogus. It should have one more digit. Is this true. The VIN is " 16867L114388. That is taken of the VIN tag. How does this decode and should there be more numbers? Morley

Thanks for getting back to me. So the VIN is short a number.---Is it possible or is this not a correct VIN?

He ended up messaging he. He has a legit factory misstamp on the vin tag. Rare! Missing the 7 for the year

No, it's missing the year which is after the model and before the production plant. Correct VIN would be:
168677114388, it's missing the 7, could be a mis-stamp but should have that extra 7.

Morley, this is how the vin breaks down, 1 Chevy division 6 impala 8 1968 67 convertible L los angels cal 144388 production number. I think its good hope this helps.

Sorry, but the info above is incorrect. 8 is not 1968. There should be another number after the 16867 (Carline, model, engine and body type); then a number (in this case should be a 7 for 1967, then the letter L (Los Angeles); then the last 6 (the unique serial number of the car.
