HERE'S A LINK TO A 1970 HUTH MODEL TAIL PIPE BENDING MACHINE WITH THE APPROPRIATE BENDING CARDS. CARDS ARE DATED March 1971. THESE CAN ALSO BE USED ON A BEN PEARSON MODEL MACHINE BY INVERTING THE ROTATION DIAL.
We are going to buy a pipe bending machine from Grissly tool company. It comes wit all the angles and forms. The only thing needed is We need the diagram of the pipes and dimensions. I am making mine out of 3 inch stainless with straight rear exit. NICK L72427impalasportcoupe
Nick,,, I bent up a pair of these some years back for my car. They looked exact from the actual photos(very rare)that I've seen from back in 69 or so of factory tailpipes. I've only seen two good photos of original 69 L72 tail pipes. Only thing needed was a half angle cut at the exit. Maybe your boy can find a Huth or Ben Person system and bend a pair up,see what you think. Very excited and anxious to see your car on the road again,,I'm sure it's a major item off your bucket list. Like to see a story or feature in a Super Chevy or like publication ,,original owner,Chevy Master Tech, ordered and checked in at the dealer you worked for, owned and and restored 50 years later, same owner,,pretty dam cool as far as I'm concerned. You can be proud Mr Nick.
Thank You TRQ. The only thing I did not like about the exhaust on the L72 was that they were too small. Chevrolet should have made them 2 1/2 inches. Mandrel bent is the way to go. My son told Me that He would sooner weld the pipes together. NICK L72 427impalasportcoupe
I agree. Like most Huth and Ben Pearson machines, they use dies and shoes to make the bends,as well as an index wheel. Would be great to have someone who could convert the die bending cards to a mandrel bending pattern. Mandrel bending doesn't "crush" the tubing in the corners as die benders do. And,they can bend a much tighter radius.
