chassis motor mounts

I believe this has been discussed in the past but I need a refresher.

I recall that big block B bodies use taller frame mounts for the motor. Is that true and if so where can I get a pair?

Weren't the the mounts upgraded later on? I had a recall on my '68 Z24 around 1972. Some sort of straps attached to the mounts were to be wrapped around the exhaust manifolds to "hold" the engine down during strong acceleration (nothing was installed on my car because I had headers). I remember a few years later that I had installed a newer design front mounts..wasn't aware whether the mounts were tall or not.

There was a campaign for Us GM Technicians to install the cables on the engines except for the 1969 big block high performance L72. My car came with the heavy duty mounts. The tall pads were used on the big blocks so the oil pan could clear the steering arm and not rub. The replacement mount have the U shaped locks on them. This prevents the engine to lift and jam the steering wheel locks, throttle linkage, and column shift automatics. NICK L72

Bill - You are confusing rubber motor mount failures with the motor mount support brackets (saddles). Yes, there was a recall on motor mounts which had a short term fix via recall bulletin to install a cable around the upper control arm shaft and secure it to a bracket mounted to the exhaust manifold.
Later, the motor mount was redesigned with an interlocking tab on the bottom which prevented the rubber from separating completely.
That subject is unrelated to the question posed by Hal.

Sluggo,

Thanks for 'straightening me out' with the brackets vs the rubber mounts. I wasn't sure how the temp fix with the cables was installed because I never saw the setup. The redesigned motor mounts were installed around 1975,,,never had any problems with them.

Look at the assy. manual for a 1967. The bracket p/n for the L-30 Is 3904081-2 lh & rh. The detail page for the L-35, L-36 also shows 3904081-2. No difference between sb and bb.

Believe they are B-Body only.

Mysterious subject. Some cars got the Talls, some the Shorts. I've had two cars side by side, same year, same engines, one had the Tall Mounts the other the Short Mounts.

I believe it depends on what Motor Mount is used, but maybe someone can jump in with more info on it.

I do know that the Tall Mounts are more common than the Shorts. I ran out of Shorts many years ago, but still have some Talls left.

Bill, from what you are saying my car may already have the tall chassis mounts even though it is a small block. I guess I will have to get off my ass and measure. I also have an original SS427 car so I can compare. How much difference in height is there between them?

I used to know the measurements, but cannot recall them accurately enough. I believe the difference between the two are somewhere around 3/4 Inch. You may want to research it over at Chevytalk. We talked about them quite a bit through the years over there.

Hal, I have a set of 66 Caprice 396 frame engine mounts in my garage. I believe they are different than the ones for my small block 67. I’ll dig them out this weekend and measure them and compare to the small block mounts I have.
Are you putting a big block in your ‘67??

Thanks guys for your input. Tim I am finally getting around to it. Been saving parts for this build for years. Nice to hear from you. Would you consider parting with the extra chassis brackets you have?

Hi Hal, ok this is what I found:
My 67 car with the 283 has the “tall” mounts, roughly 2 3/4 height
The ‘66 Caprice with 396 mounts I have are the same height
The ‘67 impala 396 mounts I have are shorter, maybe 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 “ height
So I guess both tall and short mounts were used with big blocks
If you need a set of tall mounts I would part with them, but your 67 might already have the tall ones?
Also, are you planning on selling the 327 engine?

Hi Tim:

I guess I will worry about the mounts when I get to it. Just want the motor to fit in. I will keep you in mind when I get to it. I have done the small block to big block swap before and never thought about it and the motors fit in on a 65 and a 69.

Not sure what I am going to do with the motor in it now. Runs good but Has lots of passes on it. May save it for my Chevy II. The motor in there is on its last time around.

Take measurements and check if Camaro is the same. E-bay has a lot of Camaro pads. NICK L72
