I think Monte's point was the use of the word "discovery" associated with the voyage of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1564. The different island kingdoms in the Phillipines had extensive trading relationships with China, Japan, Thailand and other Asian countries centuries before Magellan first "discovered" the Phillipines in 1521. Columbus didn't "discover" the Americas any more than Capt. Cook "discovered" Australia. All these lands were discovered in ancient times by indigenous cultures that well predated the European arrivals.
