The Mexican Government is not blocking the media. The region was completely smashed by a Cat 5 hurricane and it took out 80% of the power infrastructure for Guererro (according to a report on the BBC), there was a complete blackout because there was no way for people to get the information out.

There were no reported deaths until yesterday when some power was restored in areas and now the reports are coming out. Proteccion Civil (a government agency) has been publishing lots of photos and reports and shelter lists to get the information out there.
