I was living here when they arrived, nearly 30 years ago and Daniel and Apache remained La Manz touchstones for me ever since. I will miss seeing you in one of your two spots, Buddy, as we have missed seeing our friend and neighbor Apache, since his passing earlier this year. Rest in peace, as you lived your lives.

I think he's sitting in front of Gaviotas.. the house next door to him that I rented for 2-3 months a year for many years. The first time I was there, he saw me sitting on the curb with my laptop, trying to pick up wifi from the restaurant across the street. (For the first few years they didn't provide it at Gaviotas.) Daniel came out and handed me a slip of paper with the password for his wifi and told me not to tell anyone or everyone would want it! Every morning after that, for all the years I rented next door, I took him a smoothie for breakfast. He could be curmudgeonly but he had a good heart. I don't have to tell any of you this, however, for you probably all knew him for longer and better than I did. R.I.P. Daniel.. and my condolences to all who loved him. I know there were many. And, Daniel, sorry I finally told!!!!

Perhaps a first time connection trying to get a rental or once you had fallen in love with the place a means to keep in touch with friends and news. Daniel was the moderator of LaManzanilla in so many ways. He had opinions about a lot of things that people wanted to post on the board and sometimes they seemed quirky but he was open in his argument about why some posts shouldn’t appear and smart in diverting others to a separate thread. He was principled and fair.

He kept us in touch with each other, and was always there for a chat and an honest answer. I liked him very much. La Manzanilla will be a different place without him. Hope he left peacefully and is in a heavenly place now.

In his lovable and memorable way, he was stewing for a fight with them, and wandered the grounds looking to get thrown out. He was successful, and we were escorted to our car by Security. One of a kind guy, and a big part of the heart and soul of La Manzanilla for us. R.I.P.

What a beautiful town he chose to stay in! We are devastated to hear of his passing pretty much thinking he was invincible. He was living the life he loved, never to step foot back in the states. For 20+ years he was one of the first people I spoke with when I returned here every winter. His hangout on the beach, his stack of tequila bottles and his gathering of friends toasting the sunset will be forever in my memory.
