Shark attacks Posted by Rose on December 19, 2023, 6:21 am Please stop posting about shark attacks from other places. It is affecting the tourism and restaurants here. This town has already had a tough year. Enough!!! Your chances of getting killed while riding your bike or driving your car is dramatically higher.

The Melaque shark event may have had a one in eight billion chance of happening to any living person. (Odds are pretty good it won't be you.) But the attack had to happen to someone in the water that day. (Guesstimate that 10 million people were swimming or ocean-adjacent that day, odds are 10M to 1 that it will be you, still pretty good odds.) The attack in Melaque happened at a time when there were perhaps 1000 people in the water nearby. (All of a sudden, the odds are not all that good.)

Make it make sense.

I know of at least 2 bus loads of Tapatios who have cancelled their stay in Melaque this Christmas. That is around 90 people who will not be spending here, and Mexicans spend well during their holidays here on the coast. And those are only 2 I know of and can confirm, i would guess there are lots more. And I agree with all the scaremongering posts, they are not necessary.

David, your comments completely ignore the great numbers of Mexican tourists who come here year around to enjoy a day at the beach. Not only has Melaque suffered a significant drop in such visitors but also Cuastacomate, where a friend of mine and frequent swimmer tells me that the beach has been essentially deserted down there. I have personally noticed many fewer people in the ocean and visiting beach restaurants in LM since the Melaque incident. While the story does not deter frequent swimmers like Rose, it has kept others out of the ocean. Finally, I found your post unnecessarily snarky and unkind toward Rose. That was, simply, uncalled for.

And, yes, I swim with Rose. I am currently reluctant to swim. Not because of sharks, but because of the large equipment on the beach shoveling up rocks, sand, and dirt and dumping it in the water. The water here is turbid, dirty, and uninviting. Other beaches on the bay are crystal clear and beautiful. Let’s stop wrecking local water.
