Aztec Speedway raced into a new season and a new chapter for the track. USRA is now the sanctioning body replacing IMCA that has been here for many years. Some folks like it and some don't. That's normal. The fans, not many, enjoyed some pretty good racing and the race participants had some complaints...again normal. All in all, we are racing another year at Aztec Speedway in an economy that is not so great in this area. Many tracks across the country are simply gone, one of them just up the road in Colorado. Aztec Speedway is still here and still trying to host about 20 shows for the season. In our first day of racing, the crowd was small, the field of cars small, it was a DAY race (always makes a difference for some reason). Some people were working, some were looking for work and admittedly, some were fishing. Next week should see a larger group of cars and fans, all be it for another DAY race. Then BOOM, April 16th will start NIGHT racing and everything changes. Let's all and try as best we can to support our local dirt track. Don't let it turn into another large parking lot. And now off my soap box and on with the results of racing. I'll keep it simple. The heat race winners were: Zane Devilbiss in the A mods. Randy Dorsett in the B mods. Ron Brewer in stock car heat 1. Allen Bradley in stock car heat 2. Bub Hughes in Limited mods heat 1. Jessie Baldwin in Limited mods heat 2. Feature winners were: Zane Devilbiss in A mods, made it look easy. 2nd was Jason Keeler and 3rd was his wife Julie Keeler. Robbie Chiles and Aaron Spangler rounded out the top five. The B mod winner was Rex Higgins, also an easy win, followed by Randy Dorsett, Andy Hockenhull, Robert Cody and Kelly Klemm. The stock car feature winner was Samuel Sansoni as he led from start to finish. The heavy racing was 2nd on back with Allen Bradley finally taking 2nd and his brother Larry Bradley in 3rd as his engine blew. Fourth went to Tevor Combs and fifth to Ron Brewer. Rick Combs, Jeramy Bradley, Skyler Heath rounded out the field. Skyler Heath was strong until contact with another car. Heath thrilled the fans with a wild tip over onto two wheels in turn 4. He saved it but was done for the day. Jessie Baldwin took the win in the Limited mods by beating Jordan Eddleman to the flag. Behind Eddleman was John Hank, Jr. in a Klugston car followed by Bub Hughes and Allen Palmer. Good first run for Palmer. Bill Dowdy, Sergio Luengas and Darrell Cordary rounded out the field. The hobby stock heat race was taken down by Trent Najera and the feature had a first time winner with Bill Dutton taking the checkers in front of Najera. The sport compact heat winner was Donnie Stock and he followed that with a win in the feature for his first wins. Brittany Yates was 2nd with Dechannel Hockenhull 3rd...her first race. And that's how it all went down at Aztec Speedway on Saturday April 2. We race again next Saturday at 2pm....I'll see you there. |
