anyone that thinks the caliber of the racing at our "local" track by whatever it is called now has not improved needs to take their head out of the sand. after grabbing on to the dirty end of the stick you don't think Charlie and the crew have done a good job, "beam me up scotty" it is your time, your money and your passion Charlie. keep up the good work................ you go to any successful track in the country and you will find that the promoter calls the shots. if you don't like it stay home and complain on your computer

I am all about being POSITIVE, but you can only be poked in the eye with a sharp stick so many times before you say enough is enough. So lets look at the sharp stick, NMMRA gets a pay increase from Sandia, immediately after the X-Mods were told that there was no money left after the new clay to increase the largest class's purse so drivers could at least get there pit pass back for starting the main. Kind of hard to be positive when the sprints get $20 less to start than 3rd place in the X-Mod main. Hard to be positive when you realize that there really isn't a way to even get close to breaking even. Imagine how positive it would be to at least get your Pit Pass back, by the way that would increase the total purse by less than $300 for 25 cars and only $100 for 20 cars... On a positive note USC will pay to start the main, minimum of your pit pass back, really need to thank the Board of Directors for making that happen in ALL classes with 4 or more cars! See I can be Positive about NM Racing!

Howdy Gary

I know sir that you can be positive about NM Racing.

It just seems that when negative stuff hits this board it then eventually ripples down to the race tracks around here.

That's why I speak up when the words on here are going to hurt NM Racing.

The local NM racing area has a reputation of taking two steps forward and one step back real quick, so lets simply not do it anymore.

Nobody is making money at racing at a local level. If you consider the "buy in" and operational expenses of a competitive car in any of the classes, you will find that the purse to expense ratio is generally within a few percent. Yes sprint cars get more purse than other classes, but just like all of the classes the people that choose to run these expensive cars do so for the love of the sport. It's really a question of your tolerance of financial risk to reward. Just ask yourself if you're willing to invest another 15 to $20,000.00 in your operation for a extra $75.00 a night.

Before this deteriorates into a Racer vs. Racer battle...
Couple points need to be brought out.
1st.
Gary's point of contention lies in the fact that Charlie had a meeting for the X mod drivers,in which he went into very long painstaking detail about the fact that due to massive expenitures,there would be virtually no increase in the X mod purse for the upcoming season.
Then word got out about Charlie giving the non winged sprints a $1000.00 pay increase.for the upcoming season.
Followed by word a rather substantial purse(over$4000.00) for the 4or5 305 winged cars that will be attendance this year at Sandia
To many it seemed a bit disingenuous.
2nd.
The formation of the club was basically predicated upon two goals.
TECH and providing some sort of stipend for the entire field.
As Gary alluded to...the entire X mod purse last season totaled $840.00
There was NO additional monies requested this season other than to insure that everone got something.
No increase in winners purse or even top 5 for that matter.
All monies requested were for the bottom 1/3 of the field.
I believe totaling in the neighborhood of $200.00/$250.00
Again,
The premise/goal was to make sure EVERYONE got something.
The tech issue,at this point seems to be resolved.
This isn't X mods vs. sprint cars...
It's about an investment in a class that experienced a 35% growth rate in car counts from 2012 to 2013.

Mychal, that is exactly the point. Bobby I would love nothing more than to drive a sprint car, I grew up watching Blaine Harvey, Ricky Hood, Bo Baker, Jason Tanner, you, and so many others as a child at DCR, and because of those races that has always been where I eventually wanted to get. Today I am not where I need to be financially to do it. Please understand I Love Sprint Cars, I just hate being deceived. The Promoter said one thing and did another, that's where the problem lies. Again I am not bashing the NMMRA; I am however disappointed in the deceptions of the promoter. I apologize if I came off as bashing the NMMRA that was by no way the intent of my posts, it was however to show the inaccuracy of the information passed by the track promoter to the X-Mod drivers at his X-mod driver meeting. As Mychal said this is not a class verses class issue, its about being honest and fair.

Gary, like you I wouldn't mind seeing a little more padding on the top ten as far as pay outs go and maybe only paying the top 75%. It would be nice if it paid 350 to 400 to win and slowly decreased from there. But I was at the x-mod meeting with you and not sure if you remember. But Charlie agreed top pay all cars that start the main event I believe it was $25 dollars for last place. And if I remember correctly he also mentioned paying the B- main drivers as well (I think that's what I heard anyways) now please don't take this the wrong way. I am not trying to argue one way are another. Just saying, My heart has always been at Sandia and hopes of its success. And though I have had my differences with Charlie he seems to be moving in the right direction. Now is it enough or for that matter is it going to be better, I am hoping so. And I also hope UCS gets better I enjoyed racing there and plan to race both tracks as much as I can. And right now it seems the pay outs are pretty close at both tracks. Is it enough I don't think so but it is better then last year and hopefully will get better.

Toy you are right about Charlie saying he will pay the B-Main cars, and it is the same that everyone from 11th back gets ($25), so other than the points there is no real reason to make it out of the B-main since it pays the same as finishing in the back half of the field. Total X-mod purse is $840, the raise for sprints was more than that... of course the winner in sprints now makes more than the whole X-Mod Class (@ 20 cars) on a regular show...

first off I don't remember who stated that charlies heart is with the sprint cars but does it really matter? if you have ever seen the kamakazies on water from phoenix on t.v. it's hard to say he doesn't know how to make something work. when your hand is on the wheel it's your decision which way to turn it. if you throw something at the wall and it won't stick you try it again the next time. if the fans are not happy after this season there might not be a next. so I would say the best thing to do is support him and see what the future brings. on another note, I'm not the sharpest tack in the box but when I'm driving on a dirt road and hit a big pot hole I try not to hit it again and again to make it bigger.

Paul Anderson please explain to me (as a racer) exactly what qualifies you to know what real racers do or don't do. So far you seem as qualified to talk about what real racers and real men do as does a blind Optometrist. So please explain to me and everyone else reading where, what and for how long you have raced. I find it crass to engage you in conversation any further until answered...

Guys, Make no mistake, my post had nothing to do with NMMRA or the 305 effort as I don't have a dog in the fight. My point was that the purses are generally proportional to investment and as every racer will tell you, its never enough. On the other hand, I know nothing of the negotiations or lack there of with the management. I am hopeful that a compromise can be worked out for the X mods as it is the future of Saturday night modified racing.

Please correct me if I am wrong, But I thought the X-Mods formed a union so that they could bargain as a group and not as individuals with the hope they could get the deal they felt they deserved.

It sounds that they think their club is better off to race at a different facility. Fair enough- have to respect that.
I would expect the same response from the NMMRA/Mini Sprints/Quarter Midgets/ etc. if they were to find themselves facing the same situation.

For the X-Mods to gain any respect as a club into the future they have to show that they will exercise their options as a collective whole or otherwise they should dissolve the fellowship.

As for Sandia – it is making progress in the right direction in my opinion.
Hopefully the two parties can get on the same page.

Charlie refused to even meet with the club representatives to even discuss issues. As of right now there has been zero attempts by Sandia Speedway or Charlie to have any sort of open discussion on the matter, furthermore at his meeting when I tried to address the issues I was cut off and talked over. The Club ideas have not been forgotten, as far as the representatives are concerned we are still waiting for a meeting to discuss the issues.

Gary Guinn, based on what I have been hearing Grants has expanded the number of X mod shows, with better purses! If Sandia's X mod counts get down to 10-12 per night, we'll know why!
