How about seeing 95+ cars including current & past national division champions along with your local drivers in a USAC sanctioned event for free? If you plan on going to the sprint car show & paying - stop by the quarter midget track due north to see the future stars of racing. . These are the cars that the likes of Jeff Gordon, Kyle Larson, Tony Stewart & others started in. Again it's all for free Friday, Saturday & Sunday.
Mark Harger......you must have a relative racing here????...who is it? And why would anyone want to see go carts racing with a Briggs and Stratton 1 cylander lawnmower motor race instead of watching V8 chevys and maybe a Ford or two racing on the dirt track?
Curious…….. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but the condition of local racing isn’t in the greatest shape, not here or lots of other places. The local promoter even went so far as to go on facebook and post a 3 paragraph “remember when racecars were everywhere” back in the day that racing flourished posting just last week. The reason for my posting more than any other was to show support for the FUTURE of our sport. Look in both the stands and pits – where are all the youngsters? NOT AT SANDIA. If you don’t get an influx of a new interested generation into our sport it will be literally dying on the vine. The cost to go watch this past weekend @ Sandia was $20 for the stands + parking? The cost to stop by on your way in just north of the big track was nothing. My point was if you were going out anyway stop by and look at OUR RACING FUTURE. As far as my racing knowledge, yes I do have relatives and friends that are currently racing at BOTH tracks. I’ve even raced a little in my time, but I really don’t understand why your comments are so derogatory. If you don’t like the “go karts” as you call them that’s just fine, but remember your attitude when the car counts continue to dwindle, the local track closes and the only form of racing is drifting. I’m sure you will be on here complaining about that too. Oh and by the way if you took the time to look at those “go carts” they are full blown mini-racecars, racing frames, birdcages with 4 bar radius rods for rear suspension and the like. Ever hear of Jeremy Sherman? He was there with the chassis he builds supporting his cars and the FUTURE RACERS of our sport. It wouldn’t hurt if you might try doing the same.
Spot on... Those young "Banzai warriors" represent the future of our sport. Nice to see 100+ cars show up. Think of, How many present/past champions in full size cars started in 1/4 midgets... With the lack of continuity in Albuquerque racing the last few years, I think we may have lost a generation of racers. Duke city to Hollywood hills to Sandia asphalt back to Hollywood hills and now back to Sandia(dirt)...unless you're a diehard fan, it's difficult to keep up with who's racing where. Most casual observers have no clue there's dirt track racing up on top of 9 mile hill. Maybe a few years of continuous operation & actual promotion will rectify that. Tracks are closing all over our area . Tularosa got bladed under. Aztec/Cortez are considering USRA, due to imca sister tracks in Price Utah & Olathe Col. closing. There's not many deep pocketed owners/promoters like Royal & Sherman running around, who do it for the love of racing. It was hard to find parking @Sandia Saturday. All lots were full. The sprint pits were full, so that's encouraging. The one's who don't support local racing, will (as stated) lament the lack of a track the loudest. Sandia isn't "all we have" it's "what we have". ...I'd just as soon see it survive.
One of the biggest thrills of going to the track these days is seeing all of the young men and women who started at the Quarter Midget Track, that have transitioned into full size raced cars. Heck, some of them even have kids of their own. It's like a garden growing our racers!
