He is slowly recovering from COVID-19. I am so grateful that he is still alive!! So many residents of these long-term care facilities died from lack of oversight and proper adherence to established infection controls. In New Jersey, 1% of residents are in nursing homes, but accounted for 40% of the deaths due to COVID-19. They are a forgotten population. No one really cares about them. I just didn't want to see my husband in a body bag put in the back of a refrigerated truck. He is still not out of the woods. However, I pray that he has developed some antibodies that will protect him.
If we didn't have our own private duty aides to come into the facility, I would not have known that his linens weren't changed and his room was not cleaned. Once I found out, I went berserk and called the administrator, the corporate president and the governor about why these facilities don't have enough PPE or qualified workers to take care of these vulnerable patients.
It has been an emotional roller coaster for me. But, I still keep going. This is the longest time my husband and I have been apart since we were married 46 years ago. However, when I see his face via FaceTime or WhatsApp, I know that God is in charge and my faith will get me through this.
