interesting that running the shower works for you (it definitely wouldn't do it for me). i wonder how far you could work with this in terms of your recovery... for example, would playing a recording of a shower running, on an ipod with earphones, be as effective? i.e. could you trick your brain into relaxing your body by playing the sound of a shower? or does your brain have to feel that the people outside think you're taking a shower?
