A learning disability is diagnosed when a student demonstrates a significant level of underachievement which is caused by an information processing problem. The CPI is designed to evaluate the information processing portion of a learning disability, not the underachievement. So the CPI alone will not diagnose a learning disability but can effectively clarify the underlying reason for a learning disability and provide direction for intervention.
