I have looked at the waterproof compacts such as the ones from Olympus, but I would rather the better image quality and performance which is offered by a ILC or SLR type of camera. (Coming from someone who been using a terrible mobile phone camera )

All of the main manufacturers have released new waterproof compacts this year, so would keep a eye on them. I liked the previous generation sony, but it used a touchscreen (like my phone) which are difficult to use when wet.
