Half an hour later I landed an 80 cm Kingfish, at a guess it was short of sixteen pounds but excellent eating. A large couta also joined us on the beach and several small sharks.
A local drove into the car park with his boat attached to his vehicle, we got chatting and he showed us his fish box. He had a lovely selection of plump gurnard, many around the kilo mark. He also had a really fat Trev, which he kindly gave to me when I told him I have been having a lot of success using this as bait.
How good to see the Napier beaches firing on all cylinders. For the past six weeks the fish have been most cooperative, and long may it stay that way.
