I also sometimes fish the Auckland wharfs. Instead of a new rod consider either using a tripod (I use a UK made tripod - good for rocks beaches and just about any shore location.) or protect your rod with some extra heat shrink on the butt section where it would be sitting (on the Tank farm railings?)
