New Rod Options

Hi Everyone, I'm a new member to the forum but a long time reader. Wanted to get some opinions on a new rod. I have 2 surf rods at the moment , an Abu Veritas with the low rider guides ( casts like a dream and handles any fish that comes it's way ) and a cheaper 13ft daiwa crossfire that I got for $130 ( it's like fishing with a fence post). I fish a lot off the wharfs in Auckland where long casts can be the difference between maybe catching a barely legal fish to getting your bag of snapper, the good thing about the Daiwa crossfire is im not afraid to thrash it on the wharfs were it has to handle quite a few knocks. I also use my Veritas off the wharfs, however this rod is very precious to me and don't like to lay her down on the concrete or rest her against any railings and would prefer to just use her on the beaches. So now I'm looking for another 14ft rod that will come in at under $200 to replace the daiwa for the wharfs. I have been looking online at the okuma SAII but have never seen one in real life and at the Daiwa Coastal. I know this forum is attached to an actual tackle retailer and mean no offence by asking for advice on shopping around, but thought if there was a group of helpful fishos to ask, this would be it😃

I've used and abused my shimano aquatip rods sill going strong great casting distance and a nice rod to fight and play fish on, and the great thing is they didn't cost me a fortune. Just a thought of a cheap rod that may suite you aswel

Aquatip you say? I didn't realise they had a 14ft model. What sort of price range do they come in at? And thanks for the reply BTW.

I paid 80 for the rod alone but got a diawa crosscast 6000 reel on it, I'm sure they have 14ft I did get the 16 ft model though

I also sometimes fish the Auckland wharfs. Instead of a new rod consider either using a tripod (I use a UK made tripod - good for rocks beaches and just about any shore location.) or protect your rod with some extra heat shrink on the butt section where it would be sitting (on the Tank farm railings?) If you want to have a look and make a copy of my tripod or help with heat shrink give me a call 021 2797210. Or if you want something from the Tackle Tactics shop I will be driving past there in the next couple of weeks and can pick up.

About five years ago I bought a pair of 12foot Shimano Tritons to use off the Wellington wharves for the same reason - to protect my flash rods.

The 14foot models would be worth checking out, mine cast pretty well and I've been happy with their performance.

Theyre tippy but firmer than the Aquatips.

Thanks Nick. I've often thought about tripods and I think I recall someone on this forum explaining how they made one from an old camera tripod. I'm going to look into that at anycase.
While fishing at tank farm I've taken to tying a peace of old material to the railings so my rod can rest against it.
I grew up in Foxton and my parents still live there so I go back 3
or 4 times a year. I always have a browse in tackle tactics while I'm home, thanks for the offer though

Also with FCO closing down, they have a few Penn Prevail 14ft rods for $150. Lots of shops have them and they look good but I've never seen anyone use one. Any opinions on this rod?

Wharf Rat, you may find this helpful. You need a heavy duty tripod, one designed for video work rather than a still camera. I have used this one for a few months: it is easy to carry, it's light, it packs down small and it's very stable.

Hangler, what a piece of art!

I'll be looking around the opshops for a tripod on Saturday instead of fishing as the forecast is not looking good. Also I know you have some strong opinions on rods, the Veritas is not for you but what other rods do you use?
The fact of the matter is I still want to buy another rod.

I have two Veritas rods and it doesn't pay to voice an opinion on this site. The shop I had taken them to for repair hadn't done so, I decided I had waited long enough and so last week I repaired both of them myself.

The only comment I will make is that some rods are made for casting, some for fishing. I prefer a softer rod aimed at fishing and getting the most out of fish in the size range we normally catch. I tend to follow European anglers in this respect, their rods are in a world of their own with a price to match.

My favourite rod by far is an Okuma and when purchased I extended the butt by a few centimeters, it is now fifteen foot long. Sad to say this is a model no longer available, I know because I have just tried to buy another one.

I have just purchased another rod but I will say nothing about it as I have not really had time to put it through a true test.

If you are serious about a tripod then look on Trademe, there are some great bargains to be found there. Just recently I saw the ideal tripod for the beach angler, it went for three dollars.

The simple reality with rods is you get what you pay for usually. Ive never heard anything bad about the Penn Prevail, seems to me it sits in the middle of the pack as far as rods go. The Okuma Predator sold by Tackle tactics is another rod some say are a bit under rated and not bad for the money.

The 13 foot Penn Prevail is an awesome rod and well priced. Perfect for older fishers or newcomers. It is an easy caster. The 14 foot has a short (Aussie style) butt which wont suit some, (unless you have short arms or are fishing within 80m of shore).The 13 foot has a light tip but will still cast over 100m with ease. The butt length is standard.
Hangler this is an open forum dont be scared to say what you think on here, there are plenty of differing opinions as you well know.

I did notice the butt on the 14 foot being a bit short when I picked it up to have a feel. Perhaps that's what it was that made it not quite feel right, otherwise for the price I would have bought it then and there. Perhaps a second Veritas might be the best option for me. Do you think the older model will come down in price anytime soon?

Gary, I have never been 'scared' to write any comments, which is why I wrote for publication. My editor always gave me the difficult subjects to tackle such as the Volkner Rocks marine reserve, the damage 4x4s were causing to the dunes on the coast around the Matata/Pikowhai area and the decline of Lake Aniwhenua public access through council ineptitude.

It's unfortunate as soon as a member voices honest critique on this site, it is always followed with personal attacks. This degrades an excellent website and I wish to be no part of it, let alone be the catalyst by voicing faults that come about through bitter experience.

The many totally inaccurate catch reports regarding those who fish with kontikis, kites and torpedoes would be a classic example. 'Hori' was often on the receiving end, I note he hasn't posted for a very long time. A great shame because he gave many valuable hints on 'how to'.

WharfRat, if you are interested in a Veritas rod, early model, I have two of them for sale. I have just renewed two eyes on each of them but apart from that they are in excellent condition. I stopped using them about three months ago.

You would be welcome to one for $100.00 but it will need to be collected, then you can take your pick. It will come with a rod bag, this wasn't supplied when the rod was purchased.

I will be leaving the country for four months on May 14th. If you are keen you have would four weeks to collect the rod.

That's an awesome offer, but I solved my problem today. I just got myself an Okuma Solaris from Cash Converters for $40!!!
It needs a little TLC and a few new guides, but I'm quite happy with my purchase

Good for you WR, my favourite rod is also an Okuma. This has stood every challenge I have thrown at it, from brute bloody strength against large ray, to the finesse of an undersized snapper. This gave a bite on the rod tip that led me to believe it was a lot bigger.

I know this post is old now - but wondering how that Veritas is going? I’m about to purchase a surf rod (to upgrade from my old crud one) and am keen to switch to an overhead reel and learn to cast properly (ie off the ground and later pendulum).

Is the Veritas suitable? Any buyers remorse 2 years on?

The new veritas is still going strong after more than a year. Its great for overhead casting. I use the reel in a "low" position and haven't had any problems with it

That’s great to hear it’s held up.

When you say “low position” is that because it is a 3.0 Low Rider - or did you have to modify the rod?

Only ask because an online shop I enquired on said this of the rod: “The Low Rider Veritas rods have a reel seat attached where a normal spin reel seat is attached, if you were wanting a low mount reel seat we/you would have to attach a second one.”

I used coasters to attach the reel about 10 inches from the bottom. Phill stocks them in the shop

Hope this helps. Like I said you can get the Coasters from Phill, They work like "hose clamps" just clamping the reel to the rod
