Its a long drive to Whangaehu along a gravel road. Interesting beach though. You have Mangakuri beach nearby as well which is just over the bridge on the outskirts of Kairakau (crossing the river going south.) About 5-10 mins down unsealed road. A weedy spot at the best of times but the rocks at the end of the beach might be worth a try. So saying plenty of beach to wander at Kairakau good luck
