I like a trace that will move a bit with the surge and tide. On a pulley rig I use 600 to 800mm. With or without a float.
My other option in really heavy surf is to go very short. Usually 100 to 150 mm.
Species specific I have done well on gurnard with longer traces and snapper on shorter.
The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.
