I am interested in knowing what everyone thinks about trace lengths. What do you recommend as a good trace length when fishing east coast surf beaches, particularly the BOP and why you recommend a particular length.

I like a trace that will move a bit with the surge and tide. On a pulley rig I use 600 to 800mm. With or without a float.
My other option in really heavy surf is to go very short. Usually 100 to 150 mm.
Species specific I have done well on gurnard with longer traces and snapper on shorter. The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Trick for BoP beaches, keep em short! Too long and our fickle water movements will tangle you in no time esp if using floats. Ledger rig also works well in the BoP. ***********************************************************************************

Thanks Gary, I usually fish with around 600mm and shorten down to around 300mm in moderate surf so we are both on a similar wave-length. Cheers ABU Man

If 800mm is short! 99% of the problem of tangled rigs solved by attaching a Gemini swivel clip above the lead so on the retrieve the sinker spins (due to the wires) and not the rig problem solved.
