I fished in the Opotiki Surfcasting Clubs Hawai Competition recently. there were well over 100 entries and fishers were stretched over about four kms of beach. I fished the eastern end but to be honest all the beach looked the same apart from a stretch with a rocky bottom to the other end of the beach. Only a few snapper were caught. I caught two at our end of the beach but no others were taken in that half of the beach. There were kahawai all round me but I caught none. ASking around a very interesting fact became apparent. It seems that all the snapper were caught by fishers using crayfish for bait. Why was that I wonder? There were heaps of other baits to choose from.Any ideas? ![]() |
