I fished in the Opotiki Surfcasting Clubs Hawai Competition recently. there were well over 100 entries and fishers were stretched over about four kms of beach. I fished the eastern end but to be honest all the beach looked the same apart from a stretch with a rocky bottom to the other end of the beach.
Only a few snapper were caught. I caught two at our end of the beach but no others were taken in that half of the beach. There were kahawai all round me but I caught none. ASking around a very interesting fact became apparent. It seems that all the snapper were caught by fishers using crayfish for bait. Why was that I wonder? There were heaps of other baits to choose from.Any ideas?

Snapper seem to love cray. Some days they don't feed so much and need a real temptation to get them to bite. I'd be looking at the moon phase to see what time of month it was.

I have another possible reason but will wait and see what others think before saying.

The moon phase was excellent for that day. Talking to locals for that beach their opinion was that the beach has not fished well all season.
Distance fished, location on the beach, do fish really think I'll only eat this today?

Maybe they do. My theory may offer the reason. Ill just wait and see if anyone else thinks of the same reason.

What I'm starting to find out is for those beaches the deeper water and close proximity of foul looks to keep the fish closer to shore through the day (apart from last Saturday)LOL.
Scent trail probably helps too certainly liked my squid/prawn combo.
Just wish that I was closer to look into these beaches more, weather permitting.

No other takers? Well my theory is that the snapper have just had crayfish in their soft shell avaiable to them so I was thinking that they may have been keyed into feeding on them. Seemed to work!

On that same weekend I caught 4 snapper around the corner at Te Araroa - none were caught on cray. Fresh Kahawai and Occy was working.
Could have been that there were very few snapper around and you just happened to have cray on when they swam past.

At the recent NZACA Nationals, the snapper were caught on a variety of baits but at some times those using crayfish caught bigger fish and in bigger numbers than those fishing next to them using prime octopus and tuatua baits. As a side note, what a koura as bait, has anyone had any success with this???

Day before landed 14 on either fresh mullet or a squid/prawn combo, moon phase encouraged a good bite not something that could be said about last Saturday!
I would give yourself credit Gary you simply out fished those around you and put your baits in a place where a limited number of fish were which for that beach seems to be the trick!

If your successful on a beach that appears to have not been fishing well and in a contest then its due.
Me I've another gurnard possible beach to try and it seems decent accommodation as well!
Just waiting for the Century TTSM to join the line up to arrive before I head over and this crap northerlies to bugger off, first time I've seen 10 new lakes and ponds on the way to work this morning!

Hi All

Well here is my theory Gary. Right say you just love cashew nuts, but they are pretty hard to find or you just can't afford them. You are out at a mates place for a meal. You eat a huge tea, and can't cram no more good tucker in. And then you go into the lounge. And my god there is a bowl of salted roasted cashew nuts, sitting right there in front of you. Next minute you have devoured the whole bowl. And buggar the full tummy.

Perhaps fish are similar. And are attracted by their little delicacies which they crave, but have trouble finding. Hence your well proven success with crayfish for bait. And yes I have a thing about Cashew nuts, put a bowl of roasted peanuts in front of me, I may have one or two. Put a bowl of cashews in front of me, and I just cannot help myself. The bowl will be " GONE IN SECONDS".
