My wife's rod and reel went for a prolonged swim in the surf a couple of days ago. So I dismantled, cleaned etc and while reassembling I decided to investigate a problem which it has had for a long time. That is the age old issue of bail-arms not self returning when winding the reel. Anyway, examining the mechanism that is supposed to trip the bail-arm It seems somewhat badly designed. See photos below. Bail-arm in closed position: ![]() Bail-arm in open position: ![]() Bail-arm release rod (the on inside the spring) that is supposed to ride the ramp on the cam and roll the bail-arm elbow around, actually bends before doing so. I have dismantled both of the bailarm elbows to look for obstructions, but it all seems normal to me. The rod in the spring has a small pin which locates into a hole in the cast alloy elbow and that seems to fit just fine. ![]() |
